Treatment of a Dislocated Shoulder

The shoulder joint has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body and as a result is particularly susceptible to dislocation. In most cases, the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) is forced forwards when the arm is turned outwards (externally rotated) and held out to the side (abducted). This is the most common forms of dislocation. Posterior dislocation is the next common injury. Some common symptoms of a shoulder dislocation may be:

  • Sudden and severe pain, giving the sensation that the shoulder has popped out.
  • The shoulder will look differently on the side that is dislocated, most likely losing the smooth, rounded contour.
  • There may be numbness or discoloration of the arm, if the patient has had any nerve or blood vessel damage as a result of the injury
  • The patient will feel like holding the arm close to the body and resist rotating the shoulder.
  • Surgery is sometimes crucial to healing a shoulder dislocation if there has been a great deal of damage to the tendons, nerves, blood vessels and muscles. Arthroscopic shoulder surgery can stabilize the joint.

A shoulder arthroscopy is performed through small incisions and the surgeon uses a small camera to guide him through the inside of a joint. The camera is inserted through one incision, and the surgeon's instruments are inserted in the other incision. The benefit to this is that the patient has less tissue damage and a faster recovery time, as opposed to doing an open surgery.
