A hockey player is standing on his skates on a frozen pond when an opposing player, moving with a uniform?
speed of 12 m/s, skates by with the puck. After 2.5 s, the first player makes up his mind to chase his opponent.
(a) If he accelerates uniformly at 6.0 m/s2, how long does it take him to catch his opponent? (Assume the player with the puck remains in motion at constant speed.)

For convenience, let's say that t=0 is the moment that player1 begins to chase player2, and x=0 is player1's starting point. Okay?
We need two expressions for the positions of the players at each moment, t.
For the position of player2, x2, we use the expression: x2 = t * 12 + 2.5 * 12
For the position of player1, x1, we use the expression: x1 = t^2 * 6.0 / 2
At some unknown moment, x1 and x2 will be equal.
At that moment, t^2 * 6.0 / 2 = t * 12 + 2.5 * 12
Simplified, we have, 3t^2 = 12t + 30
Subtracting the right side of the equation (from both sides), we get 3t^2 - 12t - 30 = 0
We can now use the quadratic equation to solve for t.
The quadratic equation has the form:
t = (-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)) / 2a,
where a = 3, b = -12, and c = -30
The equation gives two results:
t = 5.741657387 and t = -1.741657387
We are interested in the positive result, t = 5.741657387.
Inserting this value into our earier expressions, we get:
x1 = t^2 * 6.0 / 2 = 98.899888649, and
x2 = t * 12 + 2.5 * 12 = 98.899888644
Player1 catches player2 in 5.741657387 seconds, having traveled 98.89988864 meters.

How do you skate backwards on hockey ice skates?
I don't play hockey or take lessons. I have a pair of hockey skates and I know how to skate backwards but how do you do it fast? I see hockey players skate backwards soooooo fast. When some people(mostly hockey players) skate they start like they are jumping side to side it's hard to explain. HOw do you do that also? Any other tips?
